Formating Wd Elements For A Mac Device

Before you start formatting the WD Elements drive, you have to perform the following:

  • First, you have to turn on your Mac device.
  • Next, insert the USB Micro B cable end into the WD Elements drive.
  • Plug the WD Elements drive into your Mac device.
  • When you have finished plugging WD Elements into the Mac, the Mac will detect the WD Elements drive.
  • The external (WD Elements) drive will now be displayed on the desktop in the form of an icon.

Your Mac contains a software known as Disk Utility. Using this software, you can conveniently format the WD Elements drive. When you format WD Elements, all the data on it will be deleted. So, if it is an already used drive, you have to back up all the files on the drive.

Stage 1-Opening Disk Utility:

  • First, navigate to the Applications folder on the Dock. Double-click this folder.
  • Next, double-click Utilities that is present within the Applications folder to open it.
  • Inside Utilities, you will find Disk Utility. Double-click Disk Utility to start it up.

Stage 2-Getting into WD Elements:

  • When the Disk Utility window is displayed on your screen, go to the left section of the window.
  • You will now see a list. The internal drive of your Mac will be the first in the list of items.
  • Below the internal drive, you will find the “External” heading. Under this heading, you can see your WD Elements drive.

Stage 3-Choosing the drive at the right level:

  • From the list of external drives on your Mac, select the WD Elements drive.>
  • You have to select the WD Elements drive that is located at the top level. In case you are not choosing the drive at the right level, your Mac might cause problems. It might refuse to format the WD Elements drive.>

Stage 4-Clicking on the Erase button:

  • At the top of your Disk Utility window, you will find the Erase button.

Stage 5-Filling in the options:

  • In the pop-up window that displays next (after clicking on the Erase button), set up your formatting options.
  • In the Name field, provide a suitable name to your WD Elements drive.
  • In the Format field, you will find a drop-down arrow. When you click this arrow, several options will get displayed.
  • From these options, select the Mac OS Extended (Journaled) option. This option will allow you to drag and drop your files. This option will also let you use the WD drive for the Time Machine backup.
  • In the Scheme field, from the drop-down menu, choose the GUID Partition Map option.
  • Now, check if you have entered all the correct settings.

Stage 6-Clicking Erase to format:

  • Click on the Erase button available at the lower-right section of the current window. This action will start the formatting process.
  • The formatting will take only a few minutes.
  • Once the process is finished, you can close the Disk Utility window.
  • On your desktop, your WD Elements drive will now be available in the form of a drive icon. You can see that it has the name that you gave it on the formatting screen to format Wd elements for mac.
  • From now onwards, you can use your WD Elements external drive just as you use the internal hard drive.

Stage 7-Performing various functions using WD Elements:

  • On your desktop, double-click the WD drive icon. This action will open a finder window.
  • You can see that your WD Elements drive is empty and ready for use.
  • Now, you can perform the following operations:
  • You will have the facility to create new folders.
  • You can drag and drop files into the drive, just as you do while using your internal hard drive.
  • You can use it for the Time Machine backup.
  • You will also be able to partition the WD Elements drive.

When you have completed performing all the operations using the WD drive, right-click the drive icon. From the options, select Eject. This action will eject the WD drive. You should do this before you pull out the USB cable. If you fail to perform these last few steps to format Wd elements for mac, the files on your disk might get corrupted.
