  • Go to the Settings section.
  • Select Update & Security > Windows Update.
  • Click the Check for updates button.
  • After updating the driver, check whether the drive is recognized.

If the drive stays unrecognizable, use the Disk Management utility to make it recognizable. 

  • Open Run.
  • Type diskmgmt.msc and tap Enter.
  • Now the Disk Management window opens and you can see your WD drive under the unallocated section.
  • Right-click on the WD drive and select Initialize Disk.
  • Choose the partition of your desire. 
  • Right-click on the drive again, then select Create New Simple Volume.
  • Change the drive letter of your desire and click OK.

Once your WD external hard disk is detected by your computer, use a third-party data recovery software like Recoverit to recover the data.
