  • First, connect your WD external hard drive to your Windows computer using a standard USB cable.
  • If your external hard drive comes along with an AC powered unit, connect it to an electrical outlet using the supplied power cord.
  • If you have not installed the WD SmartWare software on your computer, install it first.
  • To do so, open the default browser and navigate to the official WD site.
  • Go to the Software & Downloads page and scroll down to the Software for Windows section.
  • Click the Add icon available next to WD SmartWare.
  • Next, click the Download button.
  • The WD SmartWare software is applicable to My Book, My Book Duo, My Passport Wireless, My Passport Ultra, My Cloud, My Cloud Mirror, and other external hard drives.
  • After you have downloaded the WD SmartWare software, navigate to the Downloads folder.
  • Locate the downloaded file and give a double-click on it.
  • Now, the WD SmartWare Software Updater will be launched.
  • Finish the installation with the help of the on-screen prompts.
  • Now, relaunch the software and click the Settings tab.
  • On the WD SmartWare Settings screen, click the Set Up Drive button.
  • Click the Security tab from the left-side panel and enter your password in the Choose a password field.
  • Enter your password again in the Verify password field.
  • If necessary, set a hint to remember your password.
  • Make sure to enter a strong password to avoid unauthorized access in the future.
  • Next, check the I understood checkbox and click the Save Security Settings button.
  • Now, a password has been set to your WD external hard drive.
