Set up and use the WD external hard drive on your Mac computer

  • Connect the WD external hard drive into your Mac computer.
  • Note: the WD recommends formatting its external hard drive while using it with a Mac computer. If required, take a backup of files stored on the drive before formatting
  • Format your WD drive by following the instructions given below.
  • As soon as you connect the WD drive into your Mac computer, turn it ON.
  • Now, open the Applications window on your Mac computer.
  • Click the Utilities option, followed by Disk Utility.
  • In the Disk Utility window, select your WD drive.
  • Click the Erase tab.
  • Select the Mac OS Extended  option from the drop-down menu.
  • Click the Erase button.
  • Wait for the on-going process to complete.
  • Once it is completed, you can see the WD hard drive icon mounted on the desktop.
  • Wait for some minutes; the drive will automatically prompt you to use the drive for Time Machine.
  • If the automatic prompt does not appear on the screen, launch the Time Machine window.
  • Click the Preferences tab.
