Why Mac cannot Read The WD Elements External Drive?

WD Elements is one of the external hard drives provided by the Western Digital Corporation. If your Mac can’t read WD Elements external drive, check the connection between the drive and the computer. Use only the supplied USB cable to establish the connection between them. If necessary, try a new standard USB cable to connect your external drive to your Mac. Solution 1: Use The Disk Utility Function

  • After connecting your WD Elements to your Mac, open the Applications folder and locate the Utilities icon.
  • Open Utilities Disk Utility.
  • If any error message appears before launching the Disk Utility, click the Initialize button in the dialog box and open the Disk Utility.
  • Next, click the View option in the menu bar and select Show all devices to check your external drive.
  • Select your WD Elements drive from the left-side panel and click the First Aid button at the top.
  • Select Repair Disk available at the bottom of the page to start the repair process.
  • Once the repair is completed, check your hard drive and connect it to your Mac.

Solution 2: Format WD Elements To Work With yYour Mac

  • First, connect your WD Elements drive to your Mac and open the drive by clicking its icon on the desktop.
  • Select Applications from the left-side panel and click the Utilities icon.
  • Click on Disk Utility to launch it.
  • Choose the external hard drive from the left-side panel and click the Options button.
  • Select Master Boot Record in the pop-up window and click OK.
  • Choose ‘Volume Scheme’ and ‘1 partition’ from the drop-down menu.
  • Click on MS-DOS from the Format pull-down menu and click Apply.
  • In the confirmation window, select Partition to format your drive.
