WD My Cloud is a line of the personal external hard drive storage device with multiple servers designed and marketed by Western Digital. The WD MY cloud devices come in different sizes: 2 TB, 3 TB, 4 TB, and 8 TB. A second model was released with a much better capacity of 16 TB. 

  • My Cloud device uses a MindSpeed Comcerto 2000 and a dual-core ARM cortex communication processor.
  • The processor runs at 650 MHz.
  • The Gigabit Ethernet port is a Broadcom BM54612E transceiver.
  • The other components include a 256 MB of Samsung RAM and a 512 KB of Windbound flash. 
  • The My cloud device relies heavily on air convection for cooling and does not come with a fan.
  • It comes with a pre-installed My Cloud Operating system
  • It can also be over-written with a third-party Operating System.
  • The WD Smartware tool is required to completely back up the contents of your Operating system to the WD my cloud device.
  • The WD Smartware is specifically designed to allow the users to have administrative control over the external drives.
  • Like the software backup tools, the WD SmartWare allows the users to schedule backups automatically with periodic intervals between which the backup will take place without the user input.
  • You can perform a backup of all the selective files you need using the WD SmartWare.

Download and install WD SmartWare

  • Download the WD SmartWare software.
  • Open the browser, enter the WD my official cloud website in the address bar, and hit the Enter button.
  • Navigate through the WD page and find the option WD SmartWare.
  • Click the download button next to it.
  • The file will be downloaded to your computer as a .exe file.
  • Double-click on the downloaded installation files and then follow the instructions on-screen to finish the installation.
How To Use Wd My Cloud To Backup Computer?

Back up file categories with WD SmartWare

  • Launch your Windows computer.
  • Double-click the WD SmartWare application from the system.
  • Perform the following steps based on the setup screen on your computer.
  • If you have another WD Device connected to the computer, make sure to select one to take a backup of all the documents in the system.
  • Click the Arrow below the Computer icon on the Setup page if your computer has more than one internal drive.
  • You can select the preferred item from the list shown.
  • In the left side of the window, click on the Backup tab.
  • See if the WD SmartWare is set to backup categories.
  • When you set it to Backup Categories, you will see a message Ready to Perform Category Backup on the upper left corner of the screen.
  • When the message Ready to perform file backup appears, you can change the backup mode by clicking the category backup to switch.
  • Click the Advanced View option.
  • In the Detailed View section of the Advanced View, do the following actions.
  • Select the files necessary for backup. You can click on Next to also backup specific categories.
  • Click the Apply Changes button and then click the Start Backup.
