USB cable

Use a new USB cable to establish the connection between the WD external hard drive and your computer.

Antivirus software

Enable USB Root Hub

  • Navigate to the Windows search bar, type ‘devmgmt.msc’ without the quotes, and press Enter.
  • The Device Manager window will open.
  • Navigate to Universal Serial Bus Controllers, right-click the USB Root Hub option, and choose the Properties option.
  • Click the Power Management tab and deselect the checkbox next to the ‘Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power’ option.
  • Reboot the computer and check if the issue has been resolved.
  • If the issue persists, proceed with the following steps.

Changing drive letter

  • Right-click the This PC tab and click the Manage option followed by the Disk Management option.
  • Search for the WD external hard drive on the left panel and right-click it.
  • Choose the Select Change drive letter and path option from the context menu.
  • Assign a drive letter for the WD external hard drive.

Show all hidden devices

  • Open the Device Manager window by entering the devmgmt.msc command in the search bar on your Windows computer.
  • Navigate to the View tab and select the Show Hidden Devices option.
  • Expand all the sections.
  • If you see any entry in grey, right-click it and choose the Uninstall option.
  • Repeat the same to uninstall all the greyed entries.
  • After rebooting the computer, check if the WD external drive issue has been resolved.
  • If the issue continues, format the WD external hard drive.
