Guidance for My Book 2TB External Disk Failure Issue

WD My Book is an external hard drive used for backup and storage. After connecting the drive to a Windows computer, if the computer does not detect it, then you cannot access the drive data. Solution-1: Check the USB Connection

  • Disconnect the USB cable from the computer, connect it to the other USB port, and see if the drive is detected.
  • Check if the USB cable is tampered and replace it with a new one.
  • Make sure the power cable is not faulty. Otherwise, plug it to another power outlet and check if the drive is detected now.
  • If it is a loose connection, tighten the USB cable ends to secure the connection.

Solution-2: Change the Drive Letter

  • On the computer, right-click My PC and select the Manage option. Then choose Disk Management.
  • In the window that opens up, find the WD My Book drive. If you cannot find it, search for any unusual drive in the list.
  • Now, right-click the drive and select Change Drive Letter and Paths.
  • Assign a new letter to the WD drive and save the settings.
  • Check if the drive is visible on the computer and open it.

  • Press the Win and R keys together to open the Run box, enter “devmgmt.msc,” and click OK.
  • In the Device Management window, click the View tab and choose Show hidden devices.
  • Search all the entries in the list and click them to expand. If you see a grayed entry, then right-click it and select Uninstall.
