Step 1 - Partitioning and formatting your WD drive

Windows 10/8.1

  • Navigate to the Start icon, right-click it, and choose the Disk Management option.
  • Select your WD drive. If it is already partitioned, you will see the blue bar above it.
  • Right-click the bar and select the Delete Volume option.
  • If the WD drive is not partitioned yet, right-click the black bar and select the New Simple Volume option.
  • This will launch the ‘Welcome to the New Simple Volume Wizard’ window on the screen.
  • Click the Next button, select the volume you need from the Simple Volume Size in MB drop-down list, and click Next.
  • In the Assign Drive Letter or Path window, select the radio button next to the Assign the following drive letter option.
  • Choose the drive letter from the drop-down menu and select the Next option at the bottom of the screen.
  • Now, the Format Partition window opens.
  • Select the radio button beside the ‘Format this volume with the following settings’ option.
  • Choose the NTFS option from the File System drop-down menu. Click the checkbox beside the Perform a quick format option, and click the Next button.
  • After you click the Finish option, the WD drive starts to format the WD drive.

Mac (Mojave/Catalina)

  • Launch the Disk Utility window and select the WD drive on the left panel.
  • Go to the Erase tab, choose the Mac OS Extended (Journaled) option, and click Erase.
  • Once finished, select the Done option.

Step 2 - Updating the WD SmartWare program

  • Visit the official WD website, search for the WD SmartWare updater program, and click the Download button.
  • Locate the downloaded file and double-click it.
  • After opening the WD SmartWare updater, follow the steps that prompt on the screen to finish the update process.
  • Now, open the WD SmartWare software on the computer.
  • Navigate to the Backup tab and check if the status of Start Backup is active.
  • Select the Category or File Backup option and then click the Start Backup button to back up your data.
  • Instead of the WD SmartWare software, you can use the WD Backup software. Both software perform the same function.
