Western Digital Firmware Update

  • Western Digital (WD) Firmware, like a computer operating system, is embedded in the hardware of the WD device to control its functions. WD Firmware Updater is available for Windows and Mac computers.
  • Firmwares are either written in Read-Only Memory(ROM) or Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory( EPROM).
  • Whenever a firmware update is available for the drives, it notifies the user or automatically downloads the updated version if the product is registered.

Western Digital My Cloud Firmware Update

  • WD My Cloud Firmware can be updated from WD My Cloud's main page. Click on the Settings icon that is available on the top-right corner on the My Cloud main page.
  • Under the settings menu, a drop-down box appears. Select the Firmware Update option. You can update the firmware for WD My Cloud on your device in two ways, either manually or automatically.
  • To update the firmware automatically, select the Update Now option displayed on it.
  • Then, select the Install and Reboot option, and the upgrade takes place automatically. It takes some time for the process to complete.
  • After the firmware update gets completed, My Cloud will start to Reboot.
  • Now, the automatic update of My Cloud will complete successfully. 
  • To update My Cloud manually, you need to first download the firmware update from the official site. Save the file on your desktop in order to easily access it while updating.
  • Click the Manual Update option under Firmware Update on the My Cloud main page.
  • Then, click the Update from file tab at the bottom of the screen.
  • Browse for the downloaded file and click the Open tab after selecting it. The file format will be .deb.
  • After opening the downloaded file, click on the Install and Reboot option.
  • After the Update process, My cloud will reboot.
  • You can view the updated version of the firmware on the main page of the WD My Cloud. 

Western Digital My Book Essential Firmware Update

You can update the Firmware for WD My Book from the My Book dashboard’s main page.

  • From the main page, select Settings option --> click Updates.
  • To automatically download the update, select Check for update.
  • If there is no latest firmware version available, then close the pop-up window and enable the Auto Update to set the automatic update process.
  • If there is an update available for My Book, it would automatically access and update the firmware. Select Install and Reboot --> OK.
  • Now the WD My Book will reboot and get updated to its latest version.
  • You can also update the firmware manually, after downloading the file from the official site.
  • Select the Update from File option to search and open the downloaded file.

Western Digital Elements Firmware Upadte

  • First, download the suitable Firmware for WD Elements from the official site using your web browser. Make sure you are downloading the latest version of the firmware.
  • During the update process, make sure to maintain a stable power supply throughout the process. If the power supply is interrupted, the device may become permanently damaged and unusable.
  • The downloaded file format will be in the extension.IMG. Extract it from.ZIP file to firmware update and save it in the USB drive directory.
  • Switch on the WD drive and connect it to the computer.
  • After connecting it to the computer, the main page of the WD Element will pop-up. It notifies that there is a New Firmware Update found.
  • Tap the Enter button to start the New Firmware update for your drive.
  • Select OK --> Enter. Then, the system will get restarted automatically.
  • The file name should not be renamed, and the firmware update file should be stored in the USB drive directory. You need to restart the system when prompted.
  • Wait until the firmware update process completes. Now, the system opens with the new updated version.

Western Digital (WD)TV Live Firmware Update

Western Digital TV Live Firmware can be updated to access new features and modifications.

  • Download the correct Firmware for your WD TV and install it in the folder.
  • You can download the latest firmware version from the manufacturer’s site.
  • Go to the firmware update (.ZIP) file and extract the data to the USB driver’s directory.
  • The zip files contain three files with (.BIN, .VER, .FFF) extensions, all of which have to be stored in the USB drive storage.
  • Switch ON the WD TV and connect the USB drive to complete the Firmware Update process.
  • The WD TV automatically opens the pop-up window after connecting the USB drive properly.
  • The pop-up window will display New Firmware Found. Tap the Enter button.
  • The WD TV Live will ask you to perform the new update. Select OK  Enter.
  • The system gets restarted and then processes the Firmware Update Mode automatically.
  • Wait for the process to complete.
  • Again, the WD TV Live restarts. You can verify your new update following these steps.
  • Select Settings  Enter  System Settings  Enter  About  Enter using your remote.
  • Now, the firmware update is now complete.

Update Firmware HDD Western Digital

To update the Firmware for Western Digital hard disk drive(WD HDD), you must download the WD Red Utility 3.5 Drive

You can download the WD Red Utility 3.5 drive from the manufacturer’s site. This drive utility is supported only on Windows (x64 and 86) and Linux (x32 and x64) operating systems. Make sure that no data is backed up in the hard disk drive. Before performing the firmware update, the drive must be removed from the RAID array. You can download the WD5741 Utility Update from the official site and extract the file to your device storage

Follow these procedures to update the firmware on Windows.

  • Open the Command Window and go to the directory where the utility is stored. Execute the following:
  • Execute wd5741 -? : to type out some usage instructions that are very brief.
  • Execute wd5741 -d? to type list of drives. 
  • Execute wd5741 -d# to update drive with # as in the previous list.
  • Execute wd5741 -dall to update all the drives that are listed.

Follow the steps as given below to update the firmware on Linux:

  • Open the terminal window.
  • Go to the directory where the utilities are stored.
  • Execute sudo ./wd5741x## -? for very short usage instructions.
  • Execute sudo ./wd5741x## -d? to get the list of drives.
  • Execute sudo ./wd5741x## -d# to update the drive#.
  • Execute sudo ./wd5741x## -dall to update all the drives.

Note: sudo stands for superuser or root access.

  • Once the firmware update gets completed, a message will get notified on the computer screen.

Western Digital Black Firmware Update

  • You can’t update the Western Digital Black Internal hard drive. If you want to diagnose the WD Black Internal hard drive, use the Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for Windows tools.
  • You can get the Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for Windows tools from the official site of the WD hard drive.
  • To download the diagnostic tool, follow the instructions given below.
  • Navigate to the official site of WD. Search for your WD Black drive and select it.
  • Now the WD Black drive’s window will appear.
  • Scroll down the screen and navigate to the Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for Windows option.
  • Click the Plus icon followed by the Download button.
  • Wait for the download process to complete.
  • Once the tool download process completes, locate the file and right-click on it.
  • Choose the Run as Administrator option. Accept the terms & conditions to continue the process.
  • Now the main screen of the diagnostic tool will appear.
  • You can find two windows on the main screen. One is located at the top, and the other is at the bottom of the screen.
  • In the top window, you can find your WD Black Internal hard drive details such as model number, serial number, capacity, & SMART status.
  • At the bottom window, your WD Black Hard drive’s partition information will be displayed.
  • Now, choose the drive you want to test or run SMART status.
  • The DLGDIAG - Select an Option window will appear on the screen as soon as you click the Run button.
  • Four options will be displayed on the screen: QUICK TEST, EXTENDED TEST, ERASE, VIEW TEST RESULT.
  • Select the test option from the list. Now, click the Start button.
  • Wait for the test process to complete.
  • Once the test process completes, you will receive a notification message with the result of the test process.
  • To exit from the tool, click the Close button.

Western Digital Firmware Update Mac

The guided instructions given below explains how to update the Western Digital Firmware for your Mac system.

  • Go to the official site of the Western Digital.
  • Choose your WD product and navigate to the Software for Mac section.
  • Click the plus icon next to the WD Universal Firmware Updater for Mac tab.
  • Before you tap the Download button, check if external drives other than the WD external drive are connected to your system.
  • If so, disconnect them from your system, and then tap the Download button.
  • After downloading the firmware file, extract it using an extraction utility.

Western Digital Hard Drive Firmware Update Utility

  • You can perform the firmware update in two ways.
  • First method: Updating with Available Firmware.
  • Second method: Manual update.

Updating with available firmware:

  • First, make sure that your WD device is connected to the Internet.
  • Now, navigate to the Firmware option.
  • Tap the Check for Update option in the Available Updates section.
  • The Install & Reboot message will appear on the screen if an update is available.
  • Wait for the WD drive firmware update process to complete.
  • Once the update process is done, your WD drive will reboot automatically.
  • If there is no update available, then Your drive is up-to-date message will appear on the screen.

Manual Update:

To perform a manual update, first, you have to sign in to the official site of the Western Digital device.

  • Look for your WD product and click the Firmware download link available on the screen.
  • Wait for the latest firmware software file to download.
  • Once the firmware software is downloaded, open your WD Dashboard on your system.
  • Click the Settings button. Select the Update from File option in the Manual Update section.
  • Open the downloaded latest firmware file.
  • Click the Install & Reboot option.
  • Now the latest firmware update process begins.
  • Once the firmware update completes, your WD device will reboot automatically.
  • Once the drive reboots, disconnect and reconnect the network to your computer to the drive.
  • Make sure to refresh your web browser. The updated Dashboard can be viewed only if you refresh your web browser.

Western Digital Tv HD Media Player Firmware Update

  • If your WD Digital TV HD Media Player has a firmware update available, you can find the Update option in the Alerts menu.
  • After clicking the Update option, click the Yes button.
